Digital materials are any online materials required for an online or in-person course. This can include etextbooks or other publisher software used in the course.
The bookstore has an up-to-date list of materials used in each class each semester. Materials may be purchased at the college bookstore. This can be done both in-person at the Dublin campus and online on the bookstore website.
Materials can be purchased either in-person at the Dublin campus or online on the college bookstore website.
The bookstore needs your student ID and cell phone to help you purchase materials in-store. Online purchases can also be made using your student ID or by a manual search for your courses. Online orders can be picked up in Dublin, at the Christiansburg site or shipped to a requested address.
Materials can be paid for by either financial aid or the student themselves. The financial aid website contains information regarding obtaining and using financial aid.
Depending on both how you purchased the product, as well as who the publisher is, this answer can vary:
The Follett ACCESS Digital Content program gives students access to their required textbook and other course materials on the first day of classes. The textbook is available in an e-book format inside the student’s Canvas class. Canvas is NRCC’s learning management system.
The Follett Access fee is listed as a separate line item on your tuition invoice. Students enrolled in Follett Access classes are automatically charged this fee, but you may opt out if desired. If the student opts out, they are responsible for finding the course materials elsewhere.
More information can be found on the Follett Access webpage.
It is best to wait until the first day of class to access your course materials. Courses open in Canvas at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of the course. You cannot access your Canvas courses prior to the first day of the course. This allows you to obtain instructions from your professor on how to best access your course materials. Waiting until the first day of class helps prevent many issues.
When signing into/creating accounts for course materials, always use your VCCS email (the @email.vccs.edu one) given to you by the school. In many cases, using a different email may lead to issues.
It is always best to decline free trials offered to you by publishers. The free trials will interfere with your course materials purchased from the bookstore, and in many cases will cause issues when the trial runs out.
No. Do not pay again on the publisher website once you have already purchase materials from the bookstore. In many cases this will interfere with your previous purchase.
When experiencing issues with online course materials, always reach out to your instructor first and inform them of the issue.
If the professor is unable to solve your issue, contact the NRCC bookstore manager, Barrett Bain for assistance at bbain@nr.edu or call the bookstore at 540-674-3638.
You can also contact the publisher of your product directly for assistance. The contact details vary by publisher, and the bookstore can assist you in finding the correct information should you need assistance.
Problems and issues with digital materials should be reported to your professor as soon as possible to avoid falling behind on coursework.
