Scientific Literacy

Scientific literacy is the ability to recognize and understand the scientific method, concepts, processes, and applications used in the pursuit of knowledge. Scientific literacy prepares individuals to make informed decisions and engage with issues related to the natural, physical, and social world. Degree graduates will recognize and know how to apply the scientific method, and evaluate empirical information.

Student Learning Outcomes

Who are we assessing?

Students enrolled in BIO 101, 102, 141 & 142 and PHY 201, 202, 241 & 242.

How is performance rated?

As part of an assignment, a course specific assessment, with at least 4 questions measuring each learning outcome, is included.

What score do we expect?

75% of the students will be rated as “competent”. A competent rating means at least 75% of the items on the assessment instrument were answered accurately.

What did we find?

The target score was met with 76.3% of students receiving a competent rating.

Where do we go from here?

At the beginning of each academic year, the General Education Committee reviews assessment findings to evaluate student achievement of General Education outcomes. The committee uses these results to identify trends, determine improvement priorities, and implement actions designed to strengthen student learning and program effectiveness.
