Petty earns welding inspector certification
New River Community College adjunct welding instructor Bobby Petty recently attended the American Welding Society's training seminar in Roanoke where he earned his Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential. Obtaining the CWI credential, which is a nationally and internationally recognized certification, includes diligent study of numerous codes, welding processes, terminology and testing methodologies.
Petty has been an instructor at NRCC since 2009.________________________________________Cox reappointed to state-level advisory board
Beckie Cox, Rapid Response Coordinator at New River Community College, was recently reappointed to serve on the Governor's Advisory Board on Volunteerism and National Service. The board was established by Governor McDonnell in July 2010 and advises the Governor and Cabinet secretaries on national and community service issues. ________________________________________NRCC Games Team releases new educational game
A group of Information Technology students known as the "NRCC Games" team recently released its latest educational game called "Ratio Racer" through the Apple App Store. The team has created several games that address topics such as synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and reading comprehension for younger students. Ratio Racer is their first game targeting math operations for high school and college students.
The current team includes members Cody Beasley, Ben Brumback, Jerry Light, Sam Loeschen, James St. Clair and Heather Walters.
NRCC Games is part of the grant-funded iLearn project and works to create educational games for iPods, iPads and iPhones based on Virginia's Standards of Learning.

Members of New River Community College's Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter recently attended a National Fall Leadership Conference in Charlotte, NC. While there, they attended motivational general sessions and professional development and career planning workshops such as business ethics and "how to dress in business attire."
Chapter members also gave back to the community recently by collecting stockings filled with toys for the Salvation Army of the New River Valley. NRCC students, faculty, staff and members of the community filled over 100 stockings for the effort. NRCC PBL students have been filling stockings for the Salvation Army for more than 20 years and they often assist the organization on the day the stockings are distributed.
Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda is a non-profit education association that helps prepare students for careers in business and business-related fields.
