Tripp hired as SkillsUSA Virginia student specialist

Deborah Tripp, of Leesburg, recently accepted the position of SkillsUSA Virginia student specialist. Though her work takes her throughout the state, Tripp is based out of New River Community College.

Since beginning her position, Tripp has presented "Vision 2013 for SkillsUSA Virginia" at three workshops and worked a booth at the Virginia Association of Trade and Industrial Educators (VATIE) conference. Her presentation included an overview of SkillsUSA, membership results from the national conference, and information about the future.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to further America's skilled workforce. The organization is a nonprofit and works in both high school and college/postsecondary schools.

New River Community College financial aid administrative and program specialist Elaine Powell, of Dublin, recently completed a master's degree in management and leadership at Liberty University.

Powell also recently accepted an appointment from the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors to the Social Services Board of Directors and a re-appointment to the Agency on Aging Board of Directors. She was also re-appointed to the New River Community Action Executive Board.

Powell has worked at NRCC for 19 years.

Grapsas authors textbook instructor's manual

New River Community College adjunct history instructor Dolores Grapsas recently authored the Teacher's Test Bank for the second edition of the "Voyages" world history textbook by Hansen and Curtis. The text is published by Wadsworth, Cengage Learning Company.

Grapsas previously authored the Test Bank for the first edition of the textbook. Her work involved making changes and updates to incorporate new material and creating new test questions to insert into a revised test bank. "The project required a great deal of discipline and stamina, but I enjoyed it," she says.

Grapsas teaches American, European and world history at NRCC and has been with the college for eight years.

Parks travels to Europe, presents papers

Now in her second year of Ph.D. study at the Institute for the Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts in Portland, Maine, New River Community College assistant professor of art Tammy Parks recently returned from traveling to Berlin, Germany and Paris, France.

While in these countries as part of her studies, Park presented three papers: "Kant's Sublime," "Hegel's Ideal of Beauty," and a larger independent study project she completed on Willem de Kooning through a Foucauldian frame.

Parks currently teaches art classes at NRCC including art appreciation, art history, drawing and painting.
