New River Community College will be offering several online legal administration courses for the fall 2011 semester. Courses offered include Introduction to Law and the Legal Assistant, Real Estate Law for Legal Assistants, Law Office Administration and Management, and Criminal Law.
"We're excited to be able to provide these courses online," says Dan Lookadoo, dean of business and technologies. "The format really helps open courses up to folks like working professionals who might not be able to make it to our campus for a traditional class."
Introduction to Law covers various areas of law in which a legal assistant might work. Topics studied include the state and federal court systems, criminal law, torts, evidence and ethics.
Real Estate Law gives students an in-depth survey of more common types of real estate transactions and conveyances such as deeds, contracts, leases and deeds of trusts in addition to discussing laws of real property. Law Office Administration introduces students to management principles and systems applicable to law firms, including record keeping, disbursements, escrow accounts, billing and purchasing.
Criminal law focuses on major crimes and their classifications, elements of proof, intent, conspiracy, responsibility, parties and defenses.
Several of these courses are required for NRCC's paralegal studies associate degree, paralegal assistant career studies certificate and for the paralegal administrative support specialization within the administrative support technology associate degree program.
Fall class registration is going on now and classes begin Monday, August 22. To see the fall semester class schedule, visit www.nr.edu/schedule .
