Additional factors that may be considered include:
Previous experience working with students with disabilities in a postsecondary setting.
Experience in understanding and application of federal laws such as ADA/504, FERPA, etc. within an educational setting.
Knowledge of available financial aid and scholarship information.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft or other student information software, case management systems and relevant assistive technologies.
The advisor will also identify career pathways in academic programs that match students' interests and skills. The advisor serves as a resource to assist individuals in overcoming academic and non-academic barriers that may affect their ability to complete their educational goals successfully. The advisor is proactive in assisting the student in the completion of a credential or degree. This includes communicating regularly with students, maintaining records of student outreach and other interactions, making connections to available college and community support services and assisting with academic interventions when necessary. The advisor utilizes a variety of technological solutions in addition to in-person interactions to connect with students. The ability to utilize and learn new technology and the willingness to work in different environments is essential.
