New River Community College offers state-of-the-art training in welding technology. Career opportunities in the welding and metal fabrication field continue to be in high demand throughout Virginia and across the United States.

Graduates of this program are certified in two national welding codes: The American Welding Society's (AWS) D1.1, Structural Welding Code - Steel and The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code, Section IX, Welding and Brazing Qualifications.

Program Objectives

The overall objective of the welding certificate program at New River Community College is to prepare the student for full-time employment in the welding industry.
In addition to certification in three major welding processes, the following skills are also covered:

  • Set-up and operation of computerized, numerically controlled cutting machines.
  • Operation of all auxiliary shop fabrication equipment: drill press, horizontal cut-off saw, metal shear, pipe beveling machine, etc.
  • Reading and interpreting welding blueprints.
  • Application of shop mathematics to practical welding and testing exercises.
  • Operation of plasma and air carbon arc cutting equipment.
  • Use of hand held oxy-acetylene cutting torches.
  • Demonstrated practical knowledge of basic welding metallurgy and weld inspection skills.

Certificate Programs

New River Community College’s Welding Program offers three levels of completion based on the American Welding Society’s - SENSE program and time available to students. Completed certificate courses can transfer to other welding certificates. All three certificates are designed for completion in a minimum of two semesters. Welder qualifications are offered.
The completion certificates are:

  • Entry Level Welder for 16 Credits
  • Advanced Entry Level Welder for 26 Credits
  • Certificate in Welding for 35 Credits

Course Summaries

WEL 100 – The Fundamentals of Welding

Through the methods of lecture/discussion, films, and demonstration, the student will be introduced to electric and gas welding and cutting. The student will be provided with the fundamental principles of joining ferrous and non-ferrous metals, welding and cutting processes, equipment operation, and safety procedures. The student will develop the skills to safely use oxy-acetylene cutting equipment and the skills to use the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process in all positions. Training will also be included in plasma cutting and air carbon arc gouging with an introduction to shop fabrication equipment.


WEL 123 – Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) I

The student will be taught the operation of AC transformers and DC motor generator arc welding sets, welding polarities, heats and electrodes for use in joining various metal alloys by the arc welding process. The student will acquire the ability to weld in the flat and horizontal positions with a variety of electrodes. The student will acquire manipulative skill, and demonstrate his/her ability by passing an ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Sec. IX welder qualification test in the 2G position.


WEL 124 – Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) II

The student will gain skills welding in the vertical and overhead positions. The student will also be required to pass an ASME welder qualification test in the vertical (3G) and overhead (4G) positions.


WEL 130 – Inert Gas Welding (GTAW)

The student will acquire the ability to set up GTAW equipment and the skills to prepare tungsten electrodes for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The student will develop welding skills in various positions and with a variety of base metals.


WEL 141 – Welder Qualification Tests I

Studies techniques and practices of testing welded joints through destructive and non-destructive testing. (Prerequisites: WEL 123 and WEL 160).


WEL 142 – Welder Qualification Tests II

Studies techniques and practices of testing welded joints through destructive and non-destructive testing. (Prerequisites: WEL 123 and WEL 160).


WEL 145 – Welding Metallurgy

Through the use of lab experiments, the student will be able to understand the physical changes that take place in metals during and after welding. The student will also perform basic heat treating experiments to gain an understanding of their effects on steels.


WEL 150 - Welding Drawing and Interpretation

Teaches fundamentals required for successful drafting as applied to the welding industry. Includes blueprint reading, geometric principles of drafting and freehand sketching, basic principles of orthographic projection, preparation of drawings and interpretation of symbols.


WEL 160 – Semi-Automatic Welding Processes

The student will be able to set up and adjust gas metal arc equipment for welding in all positions. The student will gain skills with both solid and cored wire. The successful student must also pass an ASME welder qualification test in at least the horizontal and vertical positions.


WEL 199 – 299 Supervised Study in Welding

The student will be assigned independent studies to complete for the purpose of gaining the abilities to fabricate, solve problems, and further develop the skills learned in the prerequisite welding courses. The student will also design a special welding course covering a special skill area, e.g., GTAW pipe welding, GMAW pipe welding, etc. The successful student must pass welder qualification tests in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW.


MTH 103 Applied Technical Mathematics

Provides a foundation in mathematics with emphasis in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Directs applications to specialty areas. (Prerequisite: One unit of high school mathematics or equivalent).


SAF 126 – Principles of Industrial Safety

Teaches principles and practices of accident prevention, analysis of accident causes, mechanical safegaurds. fire prevention, housekeeping, occupational diseases, first aid, safety organization, protectionequipment and general safety principles and promotion. Lecture 3 hours per week.


SDV 100 College Success Skills

Strongly recommended for beginning students. Required for graduation.
Assists students in transition to colleges. Provides overviews of college policies, procedures, curricular offerings. Encourages contacts with other students and staff. Assists students toward college success through information regarding effective study habits, career and academic planning, and other college resources available to students. May include English and math placement testing.
