A certificate in accounting can now be earned through the distance education program at New River Community College. All 12 courses in the three semester program are offered online and can be completed at times convenient to the student without attending in-class sessions. The traditional classroom program is also still available.
Associate professors of accounting Jay Wright and Ray Wurzburger have prepared the online accounting courses and say the content is the same as in-class courses. Distance education courses are designed for motivated students who wish to pursue academic goals outside of the traditional classroom setting. In distance education courses, the course is planned out with due dates established for assignments and tests. Interaction with the professor and fellow students is encouraged through the use of an online educational tool called Blackboard.
Registration is in progress for fall classes and the semester begins August 26. Distance education courses offered toward the accounting certificate this fall include payroll accounting, principles of accounting I & II, principles of federal taxation, keyboarding, college success skills, business math, computer business applications, college composition, introduction to business and several social science electives in economics, history, psychology and sociology. A computerized accounting course is taught each spring semester which rounds out the requirements for the certificate in accounting.
