A "fast-track" certificate program in welding will be offered by New River Community College starting in May. The program is free for those eligible under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA).
The program runs Monday through Friday from May 13 through August 30.
This program will introduce students to the fundamentals of welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding.
Participants will also learn industrial first aid, take ACT WorkKeys tests in preparation for receiving Virginia's Career Readiness Certificate and explore basic computer skills. At the conclusion of the program, students will have the opportunity to meet with industry representatives about employment opportunities. Potential students must be 18 years of age or older, possess fine motor skills, be physically fit and pass a drug test.
Support comes from the Virginia Department of Education Office of Adult Education and Literacy, the New River/Mount Rogers Workforce Investment Board and PluggedInVA, a Career Pathways program for adult learners.
More information, including WIA eligibility criteria, is available by contacting the NRCC Office of Transitional Programs at 540-674-3682 or GED@nr.edu .
