A "fast-track" certificate program in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) will be offered by New River Community College starting this month. The program is free for those eligible under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA).
The program runs Monday through Friday from March 25 to July 22.
Students will take courses including industrial safety, air conditioning and refrigeration, the national electric code, residential wiring methods and heat pumps.
Participants will also learn industrial first aid, take ACT WorkKeys tests in preparation for receiving Virginia's Career Readiness Certificate and explore basic computer skills. At the conclusion of the program, students will have the opportunity to meet with industry representatives about employment opportunities. Potential students must be 18 years of age or older, possess fine motor skills, be physically fit and pass a drug test.
Support comes from the Virginia Department of Education Office of Adult Education and Literacy, the New River/Mount Rogers Workforce Investment Board and PluggedInVA, a Career Pathways program for adult learners.
