The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exam and practice testing are now offered at New River Community College.
The MOS certification is composed of eight separate exams that assess a user's skill level with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook 2010. Users can choose to take an exam for each program or just the programs in which they wish to be MOS certified. Expert level tests and a "master" level MOS certification are also available.
Job seekers often find themselves struggling to articulate their competencies on resumes and in interviews - especially when it comes to desktop computing skills. Phrases like "proficient in Microsoft Excel," "experience with Microsoft Access," or "good with Publisher," give employers little to go on when assessing potential hires. But MOS certification offers job seekers a real-world, recognizable credential that demonstrates that they have the skills and expertise businesses depend on.
A 2008 survey conducted by Certiport, the MOS testing agency, found that 89 percent of supervisors thought MOS certified employees were more proficient users of Microsoft Office programs and that 85 percent of supervisors thought MOS certified employees were more productive because of their certification. Representatives will be available to discuss MOS certification at the upcoming NRV Job Fair Expo, held on Wednesday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin.
Upcoming exam dates include Tuesday, April 9, from 9 to 11 a.m. and Friday, May 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The next practice test date is Tuesday, May 14, from 3 to 5 p.m.
Practice test access is $20. Exam vouchers cost $96 each and include a practice test. The vouchers may be purchased through the NRCC bookstore in Martin Hall.
