What is intellectual property (IP)? How can intellectual property be protected? How can you make money from your ideas? These are some of the common questions to be addressed in an upcoming workshop hosted by New River Community College. NRCC will host "Intellectual Property Management and Monetization: a Practical Guide for the Creation, Management and Monetization of IP" on Friday, October 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the college's New River Valley Mall site in Christiansburg.

Participants will learn practical ways to establish and manage an IP system for a small or medium sized enterprise through an expert panel discussion with Michael J. Martin of Tech Transfer Associates in Blacksburg and Fourd Kemper, vice president and general counsel for Luna Innovations Incorporated in Roanoke. Other discussion topics include: the most effective coverage for the IP, selecting an attorney to protect IP, analyzing IP portfolios to determine the best monetization strategy in a product, license or sale; and how to negotiate, write and manage licenses. Attendees will receive copies of the presentations to provide them with a practical guide for implementing what they have learned in the workshop. NRCC has applied for CLE credit to the Virginia Bar Association for attorneys for a portion of the course. Martin has over 30 years of business and product development experience and has held positions at E.I. DuPont, PPG Industries, Ciba-Geigy, Michigan State University and Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties. In those positions, he was responsible for the development and transfer of advanced manufacturing technology; formulation and execution of new business entry plans; financial and market evaluations of acquisitions; national sales and market management; growth of community economic development strategies; and sourcing, screening, evaluation, marketing, licensing and patenting of inventions. Additionally, he is a recognized international speaker and author on technology transfer, intellectual property law, product development and implementing advanced manufacturing technology. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, a master's degree in business and is a Certified Licensing Professional™.

Kemper has served as the vice president, general counsel and secretary of Luna Innovations since November of 2008. Before joining Luna, he was an equity principal with the law firm of Woods Rogers, PLC in Roanoke from 2003 until 2008, where his legal practice focused on corporate and securities law, venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions and intellectual property and licensing. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from Duke University and a juris doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served on the Editorial Board of the Virginia Law Review.

Individuals interested in registering for this workshop may contact the NRCC Office of Workforce Development at 540-674-3617. The cost of the session is $99. Registration deadline is Friday, October 12. However, those who register by Friday, September 21, will receive a $10 discount on the registration fee.
