With consumers tightening their purse strings, a highly skilled sales force is a must for retail businesses. To help retailers meet this need, New River Community College is hosting "Improve Your Selling Skills," a professional workshop for retail sales staff members on Monday, November 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the college's New River Valley Mall site in Christiansburg.
The workshop will help participants become more effective sales professionals by learning to make a good first impression, establishing credibility and confidence, and listening to what customers are saying.
The instructor for the workshop will be Laurel Schirr, corporate trainer for NRCC. Schirr has seven years experience in sales and marketing and in training sales teams in Chicago and Singapore. Her educational background includes a bachelor's degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a master's degree in management from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
The fee for the workshop will be $18. However, thanks to special funding obtained by the college for this purpose, fees will be waived for the first 10 businesses to enroll employees (up to four employees per business).
Mark Rowh, vice president for workforce development and external relations at NRCC, said the workshop is the first in a series designed to meet the needs of area retailers. "We are developing several offerings that should be of interest to staff and managers in retail settings," he said. Future topics will include customer service, building customer loyalty, and coping with stress in peak sales periods.
To register, contact New River Community College's Office of Workforce Development at 540-674-3617. The registration deadline is Thursday, November 10.
