During a recent virtual meeting of the New River Community College Board, the board elected new officers.  Steve Harvey, of Radford, was reappointed to serve as chair, and James “Jim” Wheeler, of Giles County, was appointed to serve as vice chair.  NRCC President Pat Huber will continue to serve as secretary.

Local governments have appointed four new members to the board: Christopher Calfee, City of Radford; Craig Chancellor, Floyd County; William “Bill” Cunningham, Pulaski County; and Cameron Peel, Pulaski County.

Calfee is a commercial quality control analyst with Atlantic Union Bank and an NRCC alumnus. He and his wife, Becki, and their two daughters live in Radford.

Chancellor is an agent and developer with Thomas and Wall Real Estate and is a graduate of Missouri State University.  He and his wife, Renate, live in Willis.

Cunningham, of Dublin, is a partner at Cunningham Real Estate. He is an alumnus of American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Roanoke College.

Peel, of Dublin, is vice president of sales with Camrett Logistics and a graduate of Old Dominion University.

Other current board members include Richard L. Chidester, Margaret Dewald-Link, Jessica Littlejohn, Bobbie Potter, Sharon Scott and Jonathan Sweet.

Each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges has a local college board. The purpose of the local college board is to keep the community college responsive to the needs of its service area. Local college boards are not governing boards, but advisory boards and typically meet quarterly.  These boards also monitor college programs, policies, and actions to ensure that they are within statewide policies. Local board members also serve as advocates for the college throughout its service region and assist the college in fundraising efforts.
