New River Community College will be offering four free summer camps in Dublin and Christiansburg for local middle and high school students.
CSI: Dublin
Twenty-four current 8th through 12th grade students will have the opportunity to solve “The Strange Case of Alespicia Snard” and feel like a detective.
The camp will run June 11 through 15 at NRCC in Dublin. During the week-long, hands-on camp, participants will work outdoors “in the field” as well as process data in the lab. Professor Dennis DuBuc, former police officer and head of NRCC’s administration of justice department, and local law enforcement personnel will help students solve the case.
The week will end with a program open to family and friends for participants to show their work.
Each camper will receive a t-shirt.
Applications are available from the area schools’ guidance counselors and career coaches. Applications are due Monday, May 14, with a $25 refundable deposit.
GenCyber Ninja Day Camp –Two camps
Forty-five middle and high school students per camp will have an opportunity to become Cyber Ninjas at a unique day camp sponsored by NRCC.
A girls-only camp will run June 11 through 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college’s NRV Mall site in Christiansburg.
A boys-only camp will run June 25 through 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college’s NRV Mall site in Christiansburg.
Four areas of the cyber world will be covered during each week-long day camp: Cyber Safety Digital Design; Lego Robotics; 3-D Printing and Drones; and Cyber Security Detective Agency, where security software will be used to solve mysteries.
Each area will be instructed by a professional from the information technology field.
Both weeks will end with a one-hour session open to family and friends to see the projects completed during camp.
Campers will receive lunch every day, and a t-shirt, USB and a drone at the end of the week.
Applications are available at NRCC’s New River Valley Mall site and are due Thursday, May 31.
Funding for the camp is made possible through a National Security Agency and National Science Foundation grant.
GenCyber Blackbelt Day Camp
Forty-five middle school and high school students who have previously attended a 2016, 2017 or 2018 GenCyber Ninja Day Camp will learn advanced cyber security techniques and hear from guest speakers.
The camp will run July 16 through 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Christiansburg. The week will end with a one-hour session open to family and friends to see the projects completed during camp.
Each area will be instructed by a professional from the information technology field.
Campers will receive lunch every day, and a t-shirt and quad copter.
Applications are available at NRCC’s New River Valley Mall site and are due May 31.
