Does the library website offer an engine to help with works cited pages?
Yes, under the Help menu, you’ll find an option for Citing Sources.  This page will
provide helpful guides, websites and citation generator services.


Can I use the group study area for card games, if we play quietly?

The library study rooms are available for group study or course work. You may, however,
use the Student Lounge on the lower level of Martin Hall for card games.


Why is the library closed on Saturday and not Sunday during the summer?

Historically, the library has had more requests for Sunday hours rather than Saturday hours during the summer.  In addition, the DE Testing Center is open on Sunday and the library must be open during that time as well.


On the chat service, why are there librarians from other colleges assisting students?

Because NRCC is unable to employ librarians 24/7, the chat service enables the library to provide support to students around the clock. The library pays a subscription fee to provide this service to students.  As part of the licensing agreement, VCCS librarians cover certain hours based upon their schedules and other work responsibilities.  If you are helped by a librarian who is not from NRCC or another VCCS institution, that means there is no one available from your institution or consortia monitoring the service at that time.


Do NRCC students have access to databases and eJournals from Radford University or Virginia Tech libraries?

As a Virginia resident you may visit those libraries in person and use their databases and eJournals on-site.  Students don’t have access to databases from off-campus unless they are enrolled as a student at the respective institution.


Can we hold a book to pick up later from the library using the site?

Unfortunately, the system only allows students to place holds on books that are currently checked out (reserve a book).  You can, however, call the Circulation Desk and request that a book be held for you at the desk.  The Circulation number is (540) 674-3627.


Is there a library at the mall site?

Unfortunately, there is not a library at the mall site.  However, students taking classes at the mall have access to all of the same online resources that students on the main campus have.  The library also transfers books and other materials to students at the mall site via our courier service.  Students may contact librarians by phone, email or via our 24/7 chat service for research assistance.


Is there a place where we can preview the book in order to know if it’s the one that we need?

Yes.  From the online catalog, you may preview a summary, the table of contents and reviews on books by clicking on the book cover image.  You’ll find this option once you click on a specific title from the list of results.


Does the library have all course textbooks available? Can textbooks be checked out?

Yes, each semester the library purchases textbooks for each credit-based course offered at NRCC. The NRCC Library loans course textbooks for a 2-hour, in-library use only loan period. Students may check out textbooks from the Circulation Desk by presenting a photo identification (a student I.D., driver's license) or EMPL ID number.


How long can the NRCC library put a book on hold for me?

The library will hold a book for 3 days at the Circulation Desk.


What if I would like to watch a DVD or video on one of my classes?  Does the NRCC Library have extra copies of those?

If your instructor has placed a copy of a lecture in the Reserve Collection, you would be able
to watch that DVD or video in the library or check it out, based upon the instructor’s guidelines.
