SPD 137- Oral Interpretation

Course Description

Oral Interpretation studies the theory and practice of performing various types of literature: prose, poetry and drama. Emphasis will be placed on the relationship among the oral interpreter, the literary work and the audience. 3 credits.

Course Introduction

The main objective of SPD 137 is to help the student through presentation and discussion of selected literary works to develop an awareness, appreciation and insight into such diverse areas as:

• Working with others
• Problem solving
• Decision making
• Adapting to change
• Specific Objectives

The student will:

• Examine works of literature in order to develop an appreciation of human needs, values, achievements - past, present as well as projections for the future.
• Apply critical thinking skills in analyzing works of literature in order to appreciate the variety of human purposes and values to be realized in solving problems.
• Demonstrate an ability to make judgments and decisions refelctive of human values: ethical, aesthetic and pragmatic through selection, presentation, and discussion of various literary works.
• Examine the values of diverse cultures through selection, presentation and discussion of literary works from outside the student's own cultural group.
• Demonstrate a proficiency in basic language skills through the presentation of selected literary works.
