SGA President's Welcome

Laura Alley, SGA President Welcome to the SGA Website!

Congratulations on your decision to further your academic career here at New River Community College. I am Laura Alley and I am honored to represent you, the student body, as President of the Student Government Association (SGA) this academic year. I am incredibly excited about the many unique opportunities that the 2005-2006 school year holds. I hope that during your time here, you will make it a fun and eventful experience.

The SGA has the ability to take raw student power and harness it into making our college life better. Ideally, students, together with the administration, should be the decision makers and implementers. Of course, the administration is doing a great job – life here at New River is good. But it could be better, and it will only get better when everyone gets involved.

“College is what you make of it.” If you sit around and complain and isolate yourself from others, you will absolutely not get the full college experience. Challenge yourself. If I show up to an event, one more person will be there, and the same goes for you. The SGA will be working on better ways to communicate information to students, administration, and staff in the hope that the result will be greater involvement. Student Government simply can not be effective without the active participation and input from every student here at New River. This SGA exists for each one of you, and it is our goal to provide answers and solutions to your problems.

The SGA meets on Wednesday mornings at 8:00 a.m. in the Corporate Board Room in Edwards Hall, and because all New River students are automatically members of SGA, we would love for you to come to the meetings. If you want to truly make a difference here at New River, then I strongly encourage you to get involved with SGA this year.

In closing, I want everyone to know that this year will be a challenge for everyone. You will have a good year if you make yourself have a good year.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone around and working with you. And as the SGA theme says, “Let's Make a Difference!”

I hope that we can make this year at New River one of the best!

Yours truly,

Laura C. Alley
