Speaker's Bureau

The LEAP Center established a highly regarded speaker's bureau in which New River students and graduates demonstrated the value of transition services.  The program includes persons with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, employers, adult service agency professionals, and educators.  Individuals are available to speak to civic groups, employers and student groups.

Faculty Awareness

In 1987 the Center's coordinator and a committee of New River Community College faculty addressed the need to identify effective instructional strategies for students with learning disabilities. During a summer of cooperative effort, they prepared a handbook entitled Working with Learning Disabled Students, which offers concrete ways for faculty to teach LD students in specific disciplines (social sciences, mathematics, computer technology, office systems technology, drafting, electronics, technology, etc. ).  This publication is now disseminated by The LEAP Center.

Although the handbook was initially prepared for New River faculty, awareness of its existence spread, and the requests for copies began.  This interest was spurred on by the publication of Unlocking Potential.  In this 1987 book, authors Scheiber and Talpers described the handbook and listed the Center coordinator as contact person.
