NRCC students accepted to VT summer internship program

New River Community College students Crystal Davis and Alexandria Robinson were recently accepted to Virginia Tech’s Summer Research Internship (SRI) program for undergraduate students.

During the 10-week SRI, Davis and Robinson will work with VT faculty members to design, conduct, and present research in their chosen discipline. They will use state-of-the-art equipment, attend research seminars and learn more about future graduate study. They will live on the VT campus during the SRI and receive a stipend for their participation.

Both women found out about the program through their biology instructors at NRCC, but each has different research interests.

Davis, of Vinton, is studying science at NRCC, with an eye on transferring to a four-year school to study neuroscience. She’s also already planning on continuing on to graduate school. During her time at VT this summer, she’ll be studying cognitive and perceptual neuroscience, which will put her one step closer to her goal of becoming a research scientist and potentially, a university professor. “When you have a dream, that’s great,” she says. “But when it actually starts to become reality, that’s really exciting!”

Robinson, of Christiansburg, is also interested in transferring to a four-year college to continue her science studies. And she too, has graduate school plans in her future. Her focus during the SRI will be biomedical engineering. She chose the topic because of an interest in researching genetic diseases. Though she finds the research itself fascinating, her desire to study genetic diseases is also influenced by her aunt, who has a rare genetic eye disease. “I’m very excited to start my internship,” says Robinson.

Davis and Robinson will begin their studies at VT in late May.
