NRCC career advisors to offer employment workshops

New River Community College’s (NRCC) career advisors will be offering a series of free employment workshops beginning February 25.
The workshops will cover a variety of employment-related topics and multiple sessions will be offered leading up to the New River Valley Job Fair Expo at NRCC in Dublin on April 2.

Sessions will be held at the NRCC Mall site in Christiansburg, room 128, and at NRCC in Dublin in Martin Hall, room 242.

“Jump Start Your Job Search” begins the series and will be offered on Tuesday, February 25, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the mall site in Christiansburg and on Thursday, February 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin. This workshop will cover basic strategies for conducting an effective job search campaign and help participants tap into the "hidden" job market.

“Electronic Job Applications in Our Wired World” will be held on Tuesday, February 25, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at the mall site in Christiansburg and on Thursday, February 27 from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin. This interactive workshop will demonstrate the “do's and don'ts” of completing an electronic job application, submitting a PDF version and completing electronic "fill-in-the-blank" applications.

“Cover Letter and Resume Writing for Today’s Employers” will be held on Tuesday, March 4, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the mall site in Christiansburg and on Thursday, March 6, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin. Participants in this workshop will learn to create professional resumes and cover letters to support their job search efforts.

“Using Online Job Search Websites” will show participants techniques to use in narrowing the job hunt and how to use online search time most efficiently. Workshop sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 4, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at the mall site in Christiansburg and Thursday, March 6, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin.

“Successful Job Interviewing” will cover research techniques for improving a job applicant’s chances and questions applicants should ask employers. Workshop sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 11, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the mall site in Christiansburg and Thursday, March 13, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin.

“How Do I Look on Social Media?” will be held on Tuesday, March 11, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at the mall site in Christiansburg and Thursday, March 13, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin. Participants will discover how they appear online, how social media works and what they can do to improve their online appearance.

“Networking/LinkedIn: The Fastest Way to Get a Job” will be held on Tuesday, March 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the mall site in Christiansburg and Thursday, March 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin. This workshop will discuss using an intentional and systematic approach to tap into personal contacts and access the hidden job market.

The final workshop in the series, “How to Work a Job Fair,” will be held on Tuesday, March 18, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at the mall site and Thursday, March 20, from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at NRCC in Dublin. Participants in this workshop will learn tips on how to get the most out of the job fair experience. Materials to bring to a job fair, creating an “elevator pitch” and employer follow-up will also be covered.
