NRCC named eligible to win Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence

New River Community College has been named one of 150 colleges from across the nation eligible to win the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence and a 1 million dollar prize. Virginia Western and Dabney S. Lancaster Community Colleges were also selected from Virginia.

The Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, awarded every two years, recognizes achievement and performance among America’s community colleges. In response to Presidential initiatives and in recognition of the education and workforce imperatives facing the country, the Aspen Institute, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, the Joyce Foundation and the Lumina Foundation partnered to support the Aspen Prize.

This year’s eligible institutions come from 37 states and have demonstrated strong outcomes in three areas of student success: the rate of students’ persistence, completion and transfer, consistent improvement in outcomes over time and equity in outcomes for students of all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The 150 selected institutions are part of “round one” of the Aspen Prize selection process. Those institutions will then submit applications describing what they have done to improve student success on their campus. The field will then be narrowed to 10 finalists in fall 2014. The winner will be announced in early 2015.

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. The Board of Trustees is made up of individuals from the public and private sectors including Michael D. Eisner, Condoleezza Rice, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Madeleine K. Albright, and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan.
