NRCC career advisors to offer job search workshop series

New River Community College’s career advisors will offer a series of workshops in November designed to help job seekers put their best foot forward during their job search.

Workshops include topics such as conducting an effective job search, online applications, networking, resume writing, job interviewing and social media. All workshops will be held at NRCC’s New River Valley Mall site in room 133.

“Steps to Conducting an Effective Job Search” will be held on Tuesday, November 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. with Pam Herrmann. She will discuss the steps in the job search process, employers’ preferences for contact and the hidden job market.

Bridget Meneghini will address the topic “Online Applications in the Wired World,” on Tuesday, November 5, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. This hands-on workshop will explore online employment websites and applications, and how to navigate them successfully.

“Networking: The Fastest Way to Get a Job,” led by Kim Matthews, will be held on Thursday, November 7, from 7 to 8 p.m. She will teach participants how to use an intentional and systematic approach to tap into their personal contacts and access the hidden job market.

“Resume Writing for Today’s Employers” will help participants create professional documents including resumes, cover letters and applications. Rod Reedy will lead this hands-on workshop on Thursday, November 7, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

“Successful Job Interviewing,” with Chad Nash, will be held on Tuesday, November 12, from 7 to 8 p.m. This workshop will look at the strategies and techniques needed to succeed in the job interview environment.

Dr. John Wenrich will cover the topic “How Do You Look on Social Media – is it Good or Bad?” on Tuesday, November 12, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Participants in this workshop will learn how to improve their appearance online, find out what kind of information is online about them and what they can do to improve their online presence.

These workshops are free and open to the public and no pre-registration is required. While participants are not required to take all the workshops in the series, each complements the others, providing a well-rounded look at ways to improve the job search experience.
