NRCC to offer two new “fast-track” programs

Two new “fast-track” certificate programs will be offered at New River Community College beginning in August. One program will train students in electricity, the other will focus on medical office assisting.

Classes for both of the two-semester programs begin on Tuesday, August 27, and will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Interested students may receive financial assistance to help cover the cost of classes. Potential students must be 18 years of age or older, possess fine motor skills, be physically fit, pass a drug test and have reliable transportation.

Students in the electricity program will study topics such as the national electrical code, industrial safety, residential wiring, blueprint reading and alternative energy. They will also receive an OSHA 30 certification upon successful completion of the program.

Medical office assistant students will study medical terminology, office administration, electronic health records and word processing, among others. They will also prepare to take the Microsoft Office Specialist certification tests.

Participants in both groups will also take ACT WorkKeys tests to earn Virginia’s Career Readiness Certificate. At the conclusion of the program, students will have the opportunity to meet with industry representatives about employment opportunities.

Both programs are conducted in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Education Office of Adult Education and Literacy and PluggedInVA, a Career Pathways program for adult learners.
