“Sharper Skills Seminars” continue at NRCC in April, May

3/29/2013

New River Community College’s “Sharper Skills Seminars” for business will continue this spring with more offerings in April and May. Seminars will touch on topics such as using “mail merge” features in Microsoft Office software, time management, team building, using the Apple iPad, management skills and online marketing.

NRCC corporate trainers Jeanne Symanoskie and Laurel Schirr will instruct the workshops. Symanoskie’s offerings include “Using Mail Merge and Tracking Changes in Microsoft Word and Publisher”, “Team Building,” “Going Further with iPad,” “PowerPoint: Master Slides and Advanced Features” and “Marketing Yourself: How to Use LinkedIn.” Schirr will instruct courses including “Time Management,” “Marketing Yourself: Creating Your Own Personal Brand,” and two management skills workshops: “Keeping Good Employees” and “Dealing with Difficult Employees.”

Symanoskie’s mail merge course will help participants understand uses for the mail merge function in Word and Publisher, learn to create documents, work with data sources, add comments, track changes and compare and combine files. Her team building course will present a variety of activities that will help businesses build better teams. Participants will examine the concept of a team and factors for success, list types of teams and describe the four phases of team development. In “Going Further with iPad,” participants will gain hands-on experience with elements like multitasking, push notifications, grouping apps, managing apps and pairing with Bluetooth devices. In “PowerPoint: Master Slides and Advanced Features”, Symanoskie will focus on creating and manipulating master slides, using object linking and embedding, hyperlinking slides, and other advanced features. Her “Marketing Yourself: How to Use LinkedIn” workshop will feature instruction in how to create a LinkedIn profile, add or modify a resume, manage e-mail preferences and giving and requesting recommendations.

Schirr’s time management course focuses on how to best assign priorities to daily workplace activities, overcome procrastination, delegate effectively, hold better meetings and work with digital time-saving apps. The first of her two management skills courses “Keeping Good Employees” will cover recruiting versus managing employees, the definition of a good employee, maintaining communications, and what employees really want. Her second management skills course, “Dealing with Difficult Employees” will help participants understand types of problem employees, how to maintain a professional attitude, consistency and fairness and steps to improve performance. Schirr will also instruct a course called “Marketing Yourself: Creating Your Own Personal Brand,” which will demonstrate how basic marketing principles apply to individuals, help participants assess their strengths and weaknesses, discover their mission statements and set goals consistent with their brand.
