Children and Domestic Violence conference to be held at NRCC

New River Community College and the Pulaski Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will co-sponsor a conference on Children and Domestic Violence to be held at the college in September. The free conference will be held on Friday, September 14, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Edwards Hall at NRCC in Dublin.

The conference will cover topics dealing with children who are exposed to domestic violence, what ‘exposure’ means in terms of children’s experience and how domestic violence plays a role in the inter-generational cycle of violence.

Presenters will also explore the impact of traumatization on children and their brain development and will provide suggestions for implementing trauma-informed systems, as well as concrete strategies for helping children who have been exposed to domestic violence.
Featured speakers will be Kathryn Ford and Dr. John-Paul Abner. Ford is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and senior associate from the Center for Court Innovation in New York. Her work addresses the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse through needs assessment research, dissemination of best practices, and the provision of training and technical assistance, including through the Center’s Tribal Justice Exchange.

Abner is associate professor and director of the Parent Child Interaction Therapy Center for Excellence at Milligan College in Johnson City, Tenn. He also works with the East Tennessee Center of Excellence for Children in state custody to help disseminate Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) to therapists in the community to improve services for children who have been maltreated. This year he was named as a PCIT Master Trainer by PCIT International.

Those interested in attending the conference must pre-register online at by Friday, September 7 (CLE, DCJS, other credits pending). Questions may be directed to Jamie Clemmer, Pulaski County domestic violence docket coordinator, at .
