NRCC to offer welding course in Floyd County
|Those interested in learning to weld have a new option in Floyd County. New River Community College will offer a 14-week non-credit “Principles of Welding” course at Floyd County High School beginning in January. This course will be geared toward adults who wish to make a career change or to simply learn a new skill.
The class will run Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 17 through April 12, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and will be instructed by Doug Thompson in the FCHS welding lab. Thompson is a certified welding educator with the American Welding Society (AWS), an OSHA trainer, and has 10-years of experience teaching at Floyd County High School. He has also taught welding at NRCC.
The course will cover the four main processes in welding: SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW, along with four cutting processes. Additionally, students will have the option to work toward AWS welder certification.
The fee for the course is $460 with no requirement to purchase welding gear or textbooks. Interested individuals must call the NRCC Office of Workforce Development (540-674-3613) by Friday, January 13 to pre-register. Students will register and pay on the first night of the class.
