American Welding Society president to visit NRCC

| John L. Mendoza, president and chairman of the board of the American Welding Society (AWS), will visit Southwest Virginia next week, including a stop at New River Community College (NRCC) on Wednesday, November 9. Following a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. in Edwards Hall 117, Mendoza will speak on welding qualifications. To reserve space for the free event, e-mail Mark Gilbert, NRCC associate professor of welding, at mgilbert@nr.edu by November 4. Mendoza’s visit to Southwest Virginia will also include tours of Norfolk Southern, ALTEC Industries, Volvo Trucks and Caterpillar of Pulaski. Mendoza holds a certificate in welding technology from San Antonio Trade School and is a 36-year veteran of the welding industry. He is also an AWS certified welding inspector and certified welding educator. Additionally, Mendoza has served as an adjunct welding instructor for the Texas A&M University System and as a member of the Texas SkillsUSA Board of Directors, College/Postsecondary division.
