|NRCC staff member participates in leadership academy
New River Community College staff member Kathy Ridpath participated in the Virginia Community College System’s (VCCS) Classified Staff Leadership Academy in Richmond. The academy is a professional development activity held each year by the VCCS office and is limited to one attendee per college, chosen by the college president.
While at the academy, Ridpath participated in several lectures, group activities, and discussions. One of her favorite activities was working on case studies with other academy participants who had been grouped together by personality type.
“Overall, the academy was very informative and lots of fun! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting my peers from other colleges and different individuals from the VCCS office,” says Ridpath. “I felt honored to be chosen to represent NRCC for this event.”
Ridpath is administrative office specialist in the President’s office at NRCC. She also serves as chair of the constitution committee for NRCC’s support staff board.
NRCC professor gives presentations on student successes
Carlotta Eaton, professor of information technology at NRCC, recently gave two presentations on the “iLearn” educational games being created by her students. The “Luna and Leo” series of educational games were created by the students for the Apple iPhone and iPad systems and are designed to assist local K-12 school students in meeting the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Eaton’s first presentation, “iPhone Games for Students, by Students” took place in October at the Virginia Community College System’s information systems technology peer conference.
She gave her second presentation in November at an Apple event called “Creating Content for Mobile Devices,” held at John Tyler Community College’s Featherstone Professional Center.
The event brought together Apple and leading developers for a day-long conference dealing with software tools for building mobile applications. Eaton’s presentation included the “success story” of NRCC’s iLearn team.
