NRCC to offer course in biotechnology beginning September 29

| The first course in New River Community College’s new laboratory technician program will begin at the end of this month. Biotechnology Applications will be held on Monday evenings starting September 29. It will be held at the college’s New River Valley Mall site in Christiansburg from 6 to 9 p.m. through January 19. An informational session will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 6 p.m. Students may register for the course at this time. Course work will prepare students to work effectively in a scientific field and will cover the business behind the science. Instructor Richard Obiso says, “The class will survey the biotech community, describe how biotech and business come together, put meaning behind technology funding, technology development and how to market a project. It will also cover specific duties and responsibilities of technicians and the day-to-day operations of being in the corporate biotech environment.” Offered through the NRCC Office of Workforce Development, the course is the first in a series of offerings that will lead to a proposed Laboratory Technician Career Studies Certificate. The goal of the laboratory technician program is to develop, train and provide the workforce needed to fill current and projected job openings in technologies industries in the New River Valley and surrounding area. The curriculum will prepare students for positions as technicians in laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, academic research laboratories, private laboratories, technology-based companies, diagnostics laboratories, molecular biology-based companies, or other types of laboratory facilities.
