If you’re interested in comics and/or classic cars, New River Community College in Dublin will be “THE place to be” on Saturday, Oct. 29.

NRCC’s third annual Comic Con will be held 117 Edwards Hall and is sponsored by the library. A new event, sponsored by the automotive technology department, will feature classic cars at a “Campus Cruise In” in parking lots G and H. Both events will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are family-friendly, open to the public and free of charge.

The Comic Con will include guest artists, authors, presenters and dealers from throughout the New River Valley and beyond.

Panel discussions will include a writer’s workshop with Kim Headlee of Pendragon Cove Press; “30 Years of the Dark Knight and Watchmen” with Radford University instructors Scott McDarmont, James Monahan and Dr. Matthew J. Smith, director of the RU communications department; and John Rose, cartoonist, will hold his “Snuffy Smith Chalk Talk.” A panel will discuss “Dr. Strange and Steve Ditko,” Scott McDarmont will host “The Horror, the Horror: Comic Books, Censorship and the Comics Code,” and the 501st Legion Garrison will give a presentation during the daylong Comic Con.

Other attractions will include comic book artists/writers and authors of science fiction, fantasy and horror; 3-D printing demonstrations; appearances by former World-Wide Wrestling Federation pro, Jimmy “Boogie Woogie Man” Valiant; Gary Kwapisz, Marvel artist; Glen Richardson, NRCC student and comic book creator of Sgt. Sasquatch; and more.

Cosplayers and children wearing their Halloween costumes are welcome at the all-ages event. A first-ever costume contest will be held with categories for children, amateurs and cosplayers.
