Thirty nine NRCC nursing students receive degrees and pins in 12th annual ADN graduation ceremony

Thirty nine students in the 2016 associate degree nursing (ADN) class at New River Community College received their NRCC nursing pins and their associate degrees at a recent ceremony at the college.

This is the twelfth graduating class of associate degree nurses at NRCC. The graduates are now eligible to take their registered nurse licensing exam.

Dr. Lorrie Coe-Meade, nursing program director, presided at the event.

Teri Moore, NRCC retired associate vice president for student learning and nursing program head, was the keynote speaker. She told the students, “Your (nursing) pin represents promises, responsibility, privileges and obligations.”

Her address included lessons she learned early in her career as a nurse: assess early and often, develop your own philosophy of suffering, first things first, embrace change, practice prioritizing, seek to influence practice beyond the bedside. She urged the graduates to get involved in hospital policies, healthcare politics and seek to influence policies, practices and outcomes. She also suggested that the graduates should become active participants in creating the future of nursing.

Other nursing faculty participating in the ceremony were: Mia Copeland, Robin Troxel and Katrina Watson.

NRCC president Dr. Jack Lewis conferred the degrees. Others participating in the graduation and pinning ceremony were Dr. Pat Huber, vice president for instruction and student services, and Dr. Mark Rowh, vice president for workforce development and external relations.

Ending the program, the Rev. Andrew Taylor-Troutman led a Blessing of the Hands ceremony with nursing faculty and students to bring “healing and wholeness” to the nurse’s touch.
