What is Middle College?
Offered through Workforce Development at New River Community College, Middle College is a FREE career and leadership development program for young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who want to move through the GED certificate program to an NRCC certificate, diploma, or associate degree program. Middle College students receive academic courses in preparation for the GED diploma and Career Development courses assisting them in making career decisions and understanding the role of a college student. Free academic tutoring is also available Monday through Friday. Middle College is an investment. Only those who are ready to commit to their education are admitted into the program.
Who is eligible for Middle College?
Young adults between 18 and 24 who do not have a high school diploma, want to go to New River Community College to further their education, and are ready to commit to the program are eligible to apply for entrance into Middle College. To be admitted into Middle College, each applicant must take the Middle College Placement Test.
What can I do if I have barriers to attending Middle College?
Help is provided to Middle College students in overcoming barriers that may prevent them from attending and completing the program. Middle College will pay for transportation services from the Pulaski Area Transit.
What can I earn in Middle College?
You will earn Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for each Middle College class for a total of 15. The credentials you can earn are a GED, Virginia’s Career Readiness Certificate, and a certificate from Jobs for America’s Graduates. All of this is free to you!
How much does Middle College cost?
Middle College is FREE. Everyone is encouraged to apply for financial aid to assist with college tuition.
Are Middle College students considered community college students?
Yes. Once accepted into Middle College, individuals are enrolled in New River Community College, having all the rights and responsibilities as other NRCC students.
Where is Middle College located?
Middle College is located in Edwards Hall at New River Community College and at the New River Community College Christiansburg site.
How often do Middle College classes begin?
Learning groups, called cohorts, begin several times each semester with a minimum enrollment of eight and a maximum enrollment of 12. There are day and evening programs as well as a Distance Education option. Middle College is limited to the first 70 students who qualify.
How long do Middle College cohorts last?
The day program is scheduled for 12 weeks, and the evening program is eight weeks in duration. Classes are set-up like traditional community college classes. The Distance Education option is flexibly scheduled, but students are encouraged to complete it within 12 weeks.
