Faculty vs Students Softball Game Results

Dear NRCC,
I apologize for not getting this out sooner. I have hesitated because the faculty humbly did not wish to appear too prideful of this accomplishment, not did I wish to embarrass the student team. However, with the encouragement of so many, it would be wrong to let the event pass unannounced.

A NRCC Faculty vs. Students recreational softball game was held at 1:00pm at Randolph park, Dublin, VA on Saturday, April 10, 2010. The players each received a commemorative T-shirt and concessions were sold to players & fans during the event. The purpose of the event was for fun and to help raise a little funding for the women’s softball team next year. There were quite few fans in the stands to enjoy the competition as well. Quite often, the poor fans had to duck to avoid a foul ball flying at them. (Sorry!)

On the faculty team were the following players: Fritz Stref, Wayne Cressel, Tim Jones, Ben Kramer, Charles Kramer, Bradley Holcomb, Wes Adcock, Jonathon Surratt, Chris Smith, Jonathon Seagle, and Jason Watson.

The student team players were: Mindy Farmer, Jeffrey Putnam, Kathy Turner, Sherry Philpott, Tiffany Smelser, Matt Saunders, Shane Woodrum, Stephen Bishop, Angela Handy, and Angela Price.

The students had the first lead with three runs scored in the first inning, but the faculty team roared back with an amazing 8 runs at first bat. Thereafter, the teams swapped hits and many amazing plays. After 7 innings, the game resulted in a faculty team triumph by a score of 12-9. All in all, everyone had a great time, and the “seed has now been planted” for future recreational opportunities at NRCC.
Congratulations many thanks go out to all players who participated. Go NRCC!

Blood Drive At NRCC

An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held at New River Community College on Wednesday, April 7^th from 9:00 am to 3:00pm. Look for the Bloodmobile bus parked in the traffic circle located in front of Godbey Hall. If you wish to donate, please bring your driver’s license or other ID, and if you have questions about requirements, please look on www.givelife.org for donor eligibility. I also have a signup sheet ready. You may make an appointment to give blood by contacting me at bkramer@nr.edu or 674-3600, ext. 4431

As a bonus, donors for our blood drive this Wednesday can enjoy a free meal from the baseball team’s hamburger/hotdog sale in the Lounge in Martin hall between 11 am and 1pm. A ticket will be provided to you when you give, that you can then take to the sale in the Lounge. (Thank you NRCC Baseball Team!) In addition, those who donate will be entered into a random prize drawing for a “Sheetz” Gift Card just for NRCC students that give that day. This is brought to us by the regional Blood Drive Coordinator, Ms. Sandy Myers, who is an NRCC alumnus.

Thanks to all who have supported the blood drives at NRCC in the past. You have certainly made a difference in the lives of so many here in the New River Valley and beyond!

Video Game Contest

Student Activities sponsored a video game tournament in the lounge Monday, March 1, 2010. Six players competed using the NCAA 2007 video game for X-Box 360. Zack Hall, Langston Lewis, Jimmy McKenna, Matt Robinson, Bruce Raines, and James Huddle played their favorite college teams in short matches to determine the winner.

First place was Matt Robinson who won a $25.00 gift card to Wal-Mart, 2^nd place was James Huddle, who earned a $15.00 Wal-Mart gift card, and third place was Zack Hall, who earned a $10.00 Wal-Mart Gift Card. It was a fun tournament to play and to watch because the players were very skilled. Everyone had a good time. The next video game tournament will be held September 24, 2010.

Chess Tournament

On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, NRCC student Activities sponsored an open chess tournament in the Lounge. Two players participated: Matthew Robinson, and Zachary Hall. The contestants played their game in the student activities office, with Matthew Robinson winning. Prizes were awarded as follows:

First Place: Matthew Robinson ($25.00 Gift Card to Wal-Mart)

Second Place: Zachary Hall ($15 Gift Card to Wal Mart)

Third Place: ($10 Gift Card divided between both Matthew & Zachary)

Matthew & Zachary were also awarded T-shirts for participating.

The next NRCC open chess tournament will be held in the lounge on Tuesday, September 22, 2010.

Ping-Pong Tournament

On Monday, February 21, NRCC Student Activities hosted a ping pong tournament in the lounge at 2:30pm. This was the first of a week-long series of intramural tournaments, including chess (Tues), billiards (Thurs) , and Madden NFL 10 (Fri). Four students participated in the chess tournament: Wondwossen Urge, Yared Gedle, Brent Warner, and Elena Johnson. The winners were Wondwossen Urge, 1^st place ( $25.00 Gift Card to Wal Mart), Brent Warner, 2^nd place ( $15.00 Gift Card to Wal Mart), and Yared Gedle, 3^rd place ( $10.00 gift card to Wal Mart). Elena received a prize too, an NRCC T-shirt. Thanks to all four participants for playing, and we look forward to more players participating in the next tournaments!

Funny T-Shirt Day

“Student Activities sponsored a “Make-Your-Own- Funny- T-shirt & Picture” event in the Martin Hall Lounge from 10:00 am to 4:00pm. Many students on campus stopped by to take a picture and print it on a T-shirt for free. The event was also held at the mall site food court Tuesday November 17, from 10 am to 4pm.

Halloween Festivities At New River
