GED Program

General Educational Development (GED) Tests measure the outcome of a high school education. Adults who earn a GED prove they have acquired skills equivalent to those of high school graduates. The test is divided into five sections: mathematics, science, social studies, writing, and reading.

It is highly recommended that GED candidates prepare rigorously for the test through careful study and by completing official practice tests. Candidates who enroll in GED Preparation classes and obtain professional guidance increase their chances of success.The NRCC Adult Education program offers classes to adults in Floyd, Giles, Pulaski counties, and the City of Radford. The classes are designed to meet the needs of students at various educational attainment levels. They consist of:

GED Preparation
This class helps people learn the skills they need to pass the GED tests. Instruction covers language arts writing and reading, science, social studies and mathematics skills as well as thinking skills and tips for taking each section of the GED examination.

GED Math and GED Writing
This class is for individuals who have taken the GED tests but need to raise their math and writing scores. This class targets the key strategies of critical thinking, writing, math and problem-solving.

GED Distance Education
These GED Preparation classes are for self-motivated people who have barriers to attending traditional GED Preparation classes. They provide flexibility and convenience for students to study at a time and location that fits their schedule. Students must qualify for the class by being assessed on the GED level using our standardized assessment. Class size is limited to first 25 qualifying students.

GED Fast Track
This accelerated 8-week class is for students who desire to move at a rapid pace and take the GED test at the end of the program. Acceptance into the program depends upon a minimum score on a standardized assessment.

GED Computerized Class

Participants learn and practice skills necessary to pass the GED test in a computerized format using Steck-Vaughn 21st Century software at New River Community College or at an Adult Learning Center in their locality.

GED Practice Test
Participants take a simulated GED test on paper or in a computerized format using Steck-Vaughn Official GED Practice Test booklets or software.
