Admissions Information for
First time college students or high school students

Steps to Become a Student

Step One: Apply to NRCC

The first step to becoming a student at New River Community College is to complete an application. We have an online application process that we encourage all prospective students to use.

Begin Application

Step Two: Take English and Math Placement Testing

English and Math Placement Testing is required of all students enrolling in a program of study or taking English or math classes unless you meet exception criteria.

All students entering a program of study which requires math or English courses must meet placement requirements for these courses. Placement may be determined by high school transcripts and GPA, SAT and/or ACT scores, and GED scores; all of which are valid for five years. Additionally, students who are enrolled at another higher education institution or four-year college may submit their college transcripts for placement determination. Students who do not satisfy the placement requirements based upon these multiple measures must take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT).

Step Three: Meet with a College Advisor

All students are strongly encouraged to meet with a college advisor to ensure appropriate class selection. Advisors are available Monday through Friday at both the NRCC Dublin campus and the Christiansburg site.

Step Four: Pay Tuition/Apply for Financial Aid

Tuition bills will be mailed once you've registered for classes and tuition is due. Students can pay online or in person at the NRCC Business Office.

If you applied for financial aid using the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) you will receive notification from the financial aid office through your NRCC student e-mail account regarding the status of your financial aid. Any items listed in your "To Do" list must be completed before your financial aid can be awarded.

Visit the Financial Aid Website

If you have not applied for financial aid, the FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov) needs to be completed as quickly as possible. Financial aid funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis so it is important not to delay applying.

Step Five: Textbooks

The NRCC Bookstore on the main campus in Dublin has all of your textbooks and supplies in stock. Please visit the website (http://www.nr.edu/bookstore/) for hours of operation and textbook pricing information. Textbooks will be available at the beginning of the semester at the Christiansburg site only for classes that are taught at that location
