Ray has been a member
of the NRCC community for more than 25 years, first as a student,
then as an accountant in the college's business office, and currently
as an associate professor of accounting. He strives to encourage
and motivate his students, just as many faculty members did when
he was a student. Ray
takes great pride in the successes of his students, many of whom
have either pursued further education and/or are employed in the
accounting field. One of his favorite sayings is "Failing to
prepare, you prepare to fail," but he promotes a classroom environment
where the students will be prepared, not only for their classroom
tests but life's challenges as well.
As a high school student, Ray was unsure of his future,
as many people of that age are. One of his high school counselors
suggested accounting, a choice he has not regretted. Ray earned
an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Accounting from NRCC,
and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Business with an option
in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree
from Radford University. He has pursued additional graduate
studies at Virginia Tech and the University of South Carolina. Ray
is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Management
Accountant (CMA).
Most of Ray's professional experience, outside of education,
has been in the health care industry, including Trigon Blue Cross/Blue
Shield in Roanoke, Virginia, and a health maintenance organization
in Raleigh, North Carolina. Occasionally his students will
ask him why he is in the education field, given his credentials. Ray's
reply is "I love my students, teaching, the New River Valley, and
NRCC. There are many things more important in life than money." It
is a lesson that hopefully most of his students will learn. |

Jay joined the faculty of NRCC in January of 2005. He has been an adjunct faculty member in the accounting department for 5+ years, and also teaches for Radford University and the University of Phoenix Online, with over 19 years of classroom experience. He is very excited to enter the teaching field full-time, and very much enjoys interacting with students in the classroom.
Jay completed his B.A. degree in Accounting at Radford University , and later completed his M.B.A. (Tax and Accounting Specialization) through Old Dominion University. He continues to pursue graduate education through Madison University, with hopes of completing a second Master's Degree in Information Systems. He is also licensed as a Certified Public Accountant.
Jay's professional experience includes retail, governmental, and health care accounting work. The majority of his career has been devoted to the health care field, where he has worked as a controller for a not-for-profit facility, providing directions and oversight for various accounting processes and systems. He has a strong working knowledge of automated accounting systems and accounting practice, and strives to bring these experiences into the classroom. Jay adds, "While working in practice for over 20 years, I have always looked forward to teaching full-time some day. My dream has come true here at New River Community College. One could not ask for a better place to work!" |
